Paid On-Call Firefighter

The Mahtomedi Fire Department is a paid on-call department consisting of up to 35 regular members plus two full-time staff who respond from one station. Our fire members are fully trained to Minnesota State Firefighter Level I at a minimum, however, most are trained to level II. All firefighters must also be trained to the HazMat Awareness level and the Emergency Medical Technician Basic level. Several of our members have IV variances, and some are Paramedics. Training is extensive and drills are held on a weekly basis on Monday evenings. Maintaining current certifications and skills is important. Initially, new recruits will spend the majority of the first 12-18 months going through Firefighter I and II, as well as EMT-Basic training. It is a lot for the first year to year and a half, and one must be prepared for it.

Some of the responsibilities of members of the department include fire suppression, salvage and overhaul, medical response (ALS ambulance services), extrication, ice and surface water rescue, underwater dive rescue, public education, HazMat mitigation and other calls as requested.

The MFD requires a 20% call response from its members on a quarterly basis. We range anywhere from 60-100 calls per month, so a member should be able to maintain 12-20 calls per month, but it is recommended that members make as many calls as possible. Most of our calls are medicals with an occasional fire call.
